Update on the status of Switzerland in Horizon 2020

Date: 23/08/2016

Swiss authorities have taken necessary regulartory and legal steps to allow their country to be fully associated to Horizon 2020.

Full association is likely to take effect from 1 Janaury 2017, pending the adoption of regulations of immigration in December, which is a realistic timeframe.

Project submissions with Swiss partners

Researchers in Switzerland are advised to prepare project proposals to calls in 2016-2017 on the basis of Switerzland's full association from 2017. This recommendation is valid for all calls under Horizon 2020.

  • In the Horizon 2020 participant portal, Swiss partners should porvide their full attributable research budget ('Budget for the proposal' and 'EC requested funding' column) and request funding from the EC budget directly.
  • That includes calls for PPPs under Art. 185 TFEU. With regard to the SME instrument, researchers from Switzerland are advised to submit proposals to the 2017 cut-off dates as soon as Switzerland is fully associated to Horizon 2020.
  • In order to ensure the eligibility of the proposal in the seemingly unlikely case the association of Switzerland will not take effect, it is recommended to include three more partners from EU member states and countries associated to Horizon 2020.

In brief

In view of the expected full association, participants from Switzerland are encouraged to apply for all calls for Horizon 2020 and Euratom as participants from an associated country. In order to receive grants, they have to request relevant funding through the EC.
