What is Horizon 2020?

Horizon 2020 is the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation for 2014-2020. It is the successor of FP7, the seventh Framework Programme.

Its basis is a package of three legislative texts, one establishing the framework programme itself, another that defines its concrete implementation, and a third one laying down the rules for participation and dissemination.

Aligning European and national goals

For the European policy maker, Horizon 2020 is a means to implement the Innovation Union and the Europe 2020 strategy, designed to strengthen Europe’s competitiveness thanks to a wide variety of funding instruments, research domains, and other targeted measures.

For European and Luxembourg research organisations or innovative companies, Horizon 2020 is a unique opportunity to join European-wide or international teams to further their research agenda. The programme offers interesting funding opportunities.

New opportunities from research to innovation

Common rules to formerly separate programmes, such as the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) or the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and revised and simplified rules for participation will lessen the administrative burden.

Horizon 2020 is a very complete programme, offering opportunities for so-called bottom-up fundamental research, industry-led participation, and collaborative research around pre-defined challenges.
