Societal Challenge 1: Health, Demographic Change and Wellbeing

The European population is ageing, while diseases put a burden on society and the economy. Combined, these factors require nearly 10% of European GDP and put stress on national health and care systems. The 2016-2017 programming period therefore focuses on "Personalised medicine", similar to the 2014-15 programming period.

Personalising health and care

The 2016-2017 Work Programme includes the following calls under the "Personalised Medicine" heading

  • Understanding health, well-being and disease
  • Preventing disease
  • Treating and managing diseases
  • Active ageing and self-management of health
  • Methods and data
  • Health care provision and integrated care

All calls from the 2016-2017 Work Programme total 934 million euros.

Other European health-related activities

Societal challenge 1 is also implemented by the continuation and extension of a variety of activities not included in this work programme.

  • the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)
  • the European and Developing Countries clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP)
  • the Active and Assisted Living programme (AAL)

Topics in this work programme also respond to the priorities of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP-AHA).
